Tri-colored Glazed Pottery of the Tang Dynasty

Tri-colored glazed pottery of the Tang Dynasty is a kind of low-temperature colored pottery, which is fired at 800℃ with the white pottery as roughcast and the minerals containing chemical elements of Cu, Fe, Co and Meng as enamel colorant. The enamel colors include yellow, green, white, red and brown. During the course of firing, all the enamel colors are mixed with each other to form bright and colorful artistic works, which are called tri-colored glazed pottery of Tang Dynasty.

Tri-colored glazed pottery was firstly fired in Gaozong Period of early Tang Dynasty, when the most outstanding shapes were human figures, horses and camels. These products were of high artistic quality for their vivid shapes, elegant gestures and good shaping and spiritual effects. The tri-colored glazed potteries of human figures were general, simple and vivid. The shaping of facial features was meticulous and the emphasis was put on the reflection of bearing. The shaping of horses was featured by small heads and long necks, strong bodies, fit proportion and healthy and radiating vigor. Some were standing still, some were drinking water, some were heavily burdened, some were walking slowly, some were neighing, and some were looking back. The different gestures were vivid and natural. Camels were the main transporting means of Sino-foreign trade. After observation for a long time, the potters shaped the tall and huge bodies and the calm but brave characteristics of camel with their skillful techniques, reflecting the thriving phenomenon of the Silk Road.

The flowing characteristics of lead glaze are fully utilized in the decoration of tri-colored glazed pottery of Tang Dynasty to achieve the effect of fluency and smoothness. The colorful enamels can form various shapes and colors, just like rosy clouds in sky.

The tri-colored glazed potteries of Tang Dynasty are in round and plump shapes, elegant but grand. The decorating methods are fresh and lively for its unique style. The dignified and forthright colored glazes, the changing roughcast, interesting glazed colored potteries and richly colored decorating patterns are the remarkable achievements of tri-colored glazed potteries of Tang Dynasty.
